Te Poka Pū is our workforce development arm initially established to support aspiring Māori doctors wanting to enter general practice and surgery. The name Te Poka Pū was gifted to us by Te Oranga (the Māori Medical Students Association) in 2021. Through Te Poka Pū, we create opportunities that strengthen relationships between our Māori medical workforce and our communities with the overall vision of increasing our Māori medical workforce. Te Poka Pū utilises the capabilities and connections within and around Te Piringa Kōtuku to provide a space for Māori health scholarship and enterprise through webinars, publications and wānanga within our local kura (schools) to bring medicine to our rangatahi (youth) in a way that is fun and real! Growing the next generation of scientists and medical professionals requires connecting with our kura (schools) and communities to run engaging wānanga that can inspire future Māori scientists and clinicians.
For our aspiring medical workforce, we run regular webinars bringing our medical tuākana to our students to foster tuakana-teina (mentorship) relationships.
We are incredibly fortunate to have meaningful connections with our research partners that enable us to supervise the next generation of health researchers.
